India comfortably defeated West Indies by seven wickets on Day 5 of the second Test, securing a 2-0 series sweep at home. Chasing a modest target of 121, the hosts reached the mark in just 35.2 overs. KL Rahul starred with an unbeaten 58 off 108 balls, hitting six boundaries and two sixes, while Sai Sudharsan contributed 39 runs off 76 balls. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill were dismissed early, but the chase was never in doubt.
Earlier, India had posted 518/5 declared in their first innings, and after bowling out West Indies for 248, they enforced the follow-on following a spirited 390-run second innings from the visitors. However, West Indies couldn’t prevent defeat. With a prior innings-and-140-runs win in the first Test, India completed a clean sweep. Here are four milestones from Day 5 :
India’s seven-wicket victory marked their 122nd home Test win from 296 matches, ranking them third in terms of home victories. In doing so, India surpassed South Africa, who have 121 home wins from 154 Tests. England is second with 241 home wins from 558 matches, while Australia leads with 262 wins from 450 Tests on home soil. Overall, India’s total Test wins now stand at 185 from 596 matches.
Shubman Gill and team inflicted the sixth consecutive Test defeat on West Indies in India from 2013 to 2025. This is the joint-second-longest streak of consecutive defeats by a visiting team against India at home. West Indies now share this record with New Zealand (six losses from 2010 to 2016) and Sri Lanka (six losses from 1986 to 1994). Australia holds the record with seven consecutive defeats in India from 2008 to 2013.
India extended their dominance over West Indies by recording their tenth consecutive Test series win against them (2002–2025). This is tied for the most consecutive Test series wins against a single opposition. South Africa also have ten consecutive series wins over West Indies (1998–2024), while Australia follows with nine consecutive series wins each against West Indies (2000–2022) and England (1989–2003).
This series win was Shubman Gill’s first Test series victory as captain. In seven Tests as skipper, Gill has led India to four wins, two defeats, and a draw. He had impressed earlier in his debut series as captain in England, where India drew the five-match series 2-2. His early success in the leadership role marks a promising start to his tenure in Test cricket.
