Reece Topley gave England the perfect start after the defending champions posted an adequate 364/9 against Bangladesh in the 2023 World Cup fixture at the HPCA stadium in Dharamsala. Having sent Najmul Hossain Shanto and Tanzid Hasan packing, the left-arm quick produced a beaut to peg back Shakib Al Hasan’s off-stump. The defending champions are right on top, with the scoreboard reading a grim 26/3 for Bangladesh.

Dawid Malan’s fourth ODI century of the year and his 151-run stand with Joe Root (82) thrust England to the above-par score despite Bangladesh’s late resurgence. Put into bat, Malan shared hundred stands with both Jonny Bairstow (52) and Root to lay the platform for England’s robust total but they ultimately underachieved a bit owing to a collapse inflicted by Shoriful Islam’s 3-75 and Mahedi Hasan’s four-wicket haul. Harry Brook, Sam Curran and Adil Rashid became Mahedi’s victims in succeeding overs as England scored 102 runs in the last 13 overs at the cost of eight wickets.
