Most prominent sports bans on the 5th anniversary of the Lance Armstrong ban

2017 marks the fifth anniversary of cyclist Lance Armstrong's lifetime ban. The following slideshow features some of the most prominent bans in sports history.

Muhammad Ali, Boxing

Ali received a lifetime ban for draft evasion after refusing to go to Vietnam for religious reasons. His ban was later reduced to 3.5 years.

Lance Armstrong, Cycling

Armstrong was banned from cycling and stripped of his career accomplishments after August 1998 when it was determined in 2012 that he used performance-enhancing drugs. He had won the Tour de France in seven straight years (1999-2005).

Ron Artest, NBA

Allen Einstein / National Basketball Association

Artest was suspended indefinitely in 2004 after his participating in the brawl with the crowd when his Pacers visited the Pistons. His suspension was reduced, and he missed 86 games.

The Black Sox Scandal, MLB

Eight Chicago White Sox players were banned from baseball in 1921 for conspiring with gamblers to throw the 1919 World Series, in what became known as the Black Sox Scandal. "Shoeless" Joe Jackson is the best remembered player of the group that also included Eddie Cicotte, Lefty Williams, Chick Gandil, Fred McMullin, Swede Risberg, Happy Felsch, and Buck Weaver.

Billy Coutu, NHL

Coutu is the only NHL player ever banned for life after his actions in the brawl during Game 4 of the 1927 Stanley Cup. He attacked two referees at the request of coach Art Ross.

Tonya Harding, Figure Skating

Harding was banned for competing in figure skating in the United States following the 1994 Winter Olympics after failing to report knowledge of ex-husband Jeff Gillooly's plot to injure Nancy Kerrigan.

Hornung was banned from the NFL in 1963 after betting on the Packers. He was reinstated after one season.

Howe was banned from baseball for life in 1992 due to multiple drug suspensions. However, he won an appeal and was reinstated.

An MLB Cy Young winner, Jenkins was banned indefinitely in 1980 by Commissioner Bowie Kuhn for being found with drugs during a customs search in Toronto. An independent arbiter overturned the suspension.

Johnson infamously set the world record in the 100 meter sprint at the 1988 Summer Olympics, but he was stripped of his gold medal and banned for using steroids.

Jones was banned from attending the 2008 Beijing Olympics and forced to relinquish her five gold medals from the 2000 Summer Games after testing positive for a banned substance and admitting to doping.

Karras was banned for betting on NFL games in 1963 but reinstated one year later by Commissioner Pete Rozelle.

Manley recorded 18.5 sacks in one season with Washington, but he was banned from the NFL after failing three drug tests in 1989. He was reinstated before failing a fourth drug test.

Former Mets closer Mejia was the first player to receive a lifetime ban for repeated positive drug tests under the MLB's current PEDs testing.

Michael Ray Richardson, NBA

A promising young player when he was drafted fourth overall by the Knicks in 1978, Richardson's career was sidetracked by drug problems. He was banned for life in 1986 for violations of the league's drug policy. While he was reinstated in 1988, Richardson never played in the league again.

Rose was banned from baseball and induction into the Hall of Fame in 1989 after it was found that he bet on baseball as a player-manager. He has applied for reinstatement four times.

Schlicter was suspended indefinitely from the NFL for gambling on basketball games. He was reinstated in one year after his suspension in 1984, but was released by the Colts after rumors that he continued gambling.

The infamous Cincinnati Reds owner was banned from baseball in 1996 for racist comments and support of Adolf Hitler. She was reinstated in 1998 but sold the Reds soon after.

The Boss was banned from day-to-day operation of the Yankees in 1990 by Commissioner Fay Vincent for hiring a private investigator to dig up dirt on Dave Winfield. He was reinstated three years later.

The former owner of the Los Angeles Clippers, Sterling was banned from the NBA and forced to sell the team in 2014 after making racist comments.

A first-round pick by the Mavericks in 1986, Tarpley was banned from the NBA in 1995 for violating the terms of his court-imposed personal aftercare program after multiple DWIs and positive drug tests.

A former Cincinnati Bengals fullback, Wilson was banned from the NFL for violating the league's drug policy three times for using cocaine. He was later sentenced to 22 years in prison for burglary.
