Michael van Gerwen will have to work hard in the coming months to qualify for the Players Championship Finals. After 16 of 34 floor tournaments, 'Mighty Mike' is in a disappointing 96th place on the Players Championship Order of Merit.
At the end of the season, the 64 best players on the Players Championship circuit get to compete in the Players Championship Finals in Minehead. Van Gerwen surprisingly lost to Dominik Gruellich in the first round at Players Championship 15 on Monday, then decided to skip Tuesday's tournament.
Of the first 16 Players Championship tournaments of the season, Van Gerwen played only nine, also being eliminated six times in the first round. A quarterfinal at Players Championship 5 is a paltry highlight of a disappointing floor season so far.
After the double header in Hildesheim, the rankings are still led by Gerwyn Price, who was missing this week. 'The Iceman' is in first place with 57,000 pounds, and has a lead of 5500 pounds over number two Gian van Veen. Following behind that are Cameron Menzies and Ross Smith. The latter made a jump after winning the sixteenth Players Championship tournament of the season on Tuesday.
The top-10 is further completed by Josh Rock, Damon Heta, Gary Anderson, Chris Dobey, Ryan Searle and Martin Schindler. Luke Littler and Luke Humphries sit together in 36th and 37th. Nathan Aspinall is in 47th. Many of the top Premier League names outside of Price haven't attended many ProTours so have some job to actually maintain that position they are in. This includes Van Gerwen.
