Tacos may rule Tuesdays, but Fridays are all about new albums. This week’s list of new releases features offerings from Bob Dylan, Florence + The Machine, The Charlatans UK, and more. Whether you favor CDs, vinyl, or digital downloads, it is time to start making your shopping list. Here is a look at this week’s new music and five new albums that you definitely need to check out.
Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Bob Dylan continues his Bootleg series this Friday. Through the Open Window: The Bootleg Series Vol. 18 is a collection of rare early recordings and teenage outtakes from 1956 through 1963. It includes a previously unreleased full recording of his October 26, 1963, performance at Carnegie Hall. The boxed set tells the story of Dylan‘s maturation as a songwriter, from his Minnesota years to his time in Greenwich Village. There are also recordings from club dates, jam sessions, small informal gatherings, and hangouts in friends’ apartments.
The release is available as an 8-CD deluxe set, complete with 139 tracks and a hardcover book filled with liner notes and rare photos. It can also be purchased as a 2-CD highlight version, a 4-LP highlight version, or a digital download.
Florence + The Machine return Friday with their sixth studio album. Everybody Scream comes after singer Florence Welch underwent life-saving surgery while the band was touring in support of their previous album, Dance Fever. The resulting new album explores themes like mortality, aging, mysticism, judgment, and womanhood. The title track was released in late August and feels like a dark, witchy, empowering coven anthem, which comes through loud and clear in the song’s eerie video.
After their first 13 studio albums all charted in the UK Top 40, three of them landing at the top, The Charlatans return with a new album. The English alt-rockers’ first album in eight years pays homage to their 37-year legacy while showing that they still have something new and meaningful to say. The album has all their trademark psychedelic grooves that long-time fans are used to, while offering something new for those who may be discovering them for the first time. The first two singles, the title track and “Deeper and Deeper,” have already been released.
Greensky Bluegrass will release their new album XXV this Friday, on the 25th anniversary of the band’s founding. The band is celebrating with a two-night concert event in their hometown of Kalamazoo, Michigan, that includes a listening party and signing event. The bluegrass and Americana veterans brought in many of the musicians they have collaborated with through the years to feature on the album, including Sam Bush, Billy Strings, Lindsay Lou, Nathaniel Rateliff, Aoife O’Donovan, Holly Bowling, and more.
Witch Fever returns with their sophomore effort this Friday, entitled Fevereaten. The new album is a rollercoaster ride of highs and lows that touches on mental health issues, religious trauma, aging, and relationships. It alternates between horror and joy, all the while asking one to find excitement in these difficult times. The English rockers mix shoegaze, doom punk, metal, hardcore, and alternative in their cauldron and come up with an album that is sure to please fans of their debut album, Congregation.
