23 movies that can turn all frowns upside down
Everyone has certain movies designated as happy places — movies that take a monotonous day and turn it into something tolerable. And while some movies aren’t on everyone’s list, the following ones are. These are the movies that can always make the worst day end with an actual smile. So, if you’re having a bad day, pop on one of these and immediately feel your day transform.
'Ace Ventura: Pet Detective'
Jim Carrey can still win over audiences with his wild facial movements; just look at the success of the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. However, there was a period in the ‘90s when he owned every aspect of comedy, and Ace Ventura is a huge reason why. It’s that silly comedy we don’t get much of anymore.
'The Goonies'
Swashbuckling adventures with a group of misfits. What’s not to love about this gem from the ‘80s?
'Shrek'
Shrek is more than a movie. It’s a culture.
'Pretty Woman'
This modern-day Cinderella story never fails to be a good time. Yes, the Jason Alexander part is troublesome, but Vivian and Richard get through it and have a triumphant, storybook ending that always warms hearts.
'Gremlins'
While some scary elements of Gremlins can be pretty terrifying if you’re under the age of seven, at its core, this movie sparks joy thanks to Gizmo being the cutest creature ever to grace the big screen.
'Clueless'
What makes Clueless so many people’s go-to when they need a pick-me-up is that it’s not only a simple movie, but it also can take one’s mind back to a simpler time: the ‘90s.
'Barbie'
Anyone who spent hours engulfed in the world of Barbie as a kid knows how stimulating the movie based on their favorite doll is. From the wardrobe to the sets, it was like our collective imagination came to life.
'Ghostbusters'
Cheeky and totally out there, Ghostbusters has never failed to entertain audiences with its witty and endearing cast.
'Happy Gilmore'
Adam Sandler being beat up by the late, great Bob Barker will always be a hit.
'School of Rock'
This list could very well be composed of almost every Jack Black movie, but School of Rock edges many of them out because not only is Black amazing, but he’s surrounded by a talented and stellar cast.
'Toy Story'
What has placed Toy Story in the hearts of many is that it’s 100% relatable. Yes, toys don’t actually come to life, but every person has had a favorite like Andy, and it’s those memories of being young and just imaginative with one’s toys that make people feel happy and nostalgic when they pop this one on.
'A Christmas Story'
It is not easy to create a movie that defines a holiday, so much so that a TV network will dedicate an entire 24 hours to playing it. A Christmas Story is that movie, though.
'Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory'
There have been a few people who have stepped into the role of Willy Wonka over the years, but the entire world is in agreement that Gene Wilder will never be topped, and that’s because everything he did in that role was perfect and helped elevate that movie to be as revered as it is.
'Mrs. Doubtfire'
From the hot dog impression in the opening credits to pie face to the run by fruiting. Mrs. Doubtfire should not be a movie that holds up as well as it does, but the magic of Robin Williams has made that an untouchable piece of cinema when it comes to perking up an audience.
'Superbad'
Teen movies were a dime a dozen in the ‘80s and ‘90s, but they started to fade into the background a bit in the 2000s, with a few rare ones breaking through, including Superbad. It’s a teen movie, yes, but it could translate to older audiences and still garners new fans with each passing year.
'Wayne's World'
Not every skit from Saturday Night Live translates well to movies. Wayne’s World is not one of those. Stupid yet charming, it’s a brilliant comedy.
'Back to the Future'
Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd are among the best pairings in movie history, and the fervor around this movie proves it.
'Bridesmaids'
There is not a single weak link in the Bridesmaids cast. Everyone delivers from the start to a Wilson Phillips’ end.
'Romy and Michele's High School Reunion'
People who’ve always wanted to get back at those who made their lives a nightmare know all too well why Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion is always a must-watch, always.
'Crazy Rich Asians'
There are very few romantic comedies that are done at the level in which Crazy Rich Asians was, and that’s part of the reason it fared so well. Lavish fashion, gorgeous scenery, and one of the most gorgeous casts known to man. It’s hard not to smile when this movie’s on.
'The Parent Trap'
The way this remake was so good it replaced the original in pop culture? Iconic. Also, who does one talk to about getting Lindsay Lohan a retroactive Oscar for The Parent Trap?
'Coming to America'
No one could touch Eddie Murphy in the ‘80s, and while there are a million and one reasons why, it’s likely his morning greeting and so much more from Coming to America is No. 1 on that list.
'Deadpool'
Superhero movies are a dime a dozen, but Deadpool managed to stand out from the crowd in the best way possible, making it one of the greatest in the genre…because who doesn’t like a hero who’s a bit naughty?
