Adam Sandler is sharing more details about an upcoming sequel to Happy Gilmore. The 57-year-old comedian and actor recently appeared on The Dan Patrick Show and said Happy Gilmore 2 could start filming very soon.

“We’re working on it, me and (Tim) Herlihy are diligently trying to make a good reason for everyone to watch and have a good time. Netflix is excited about it,” Sandler said during the interview. “We’ve got some good ideas.”

Sandler went on to say that he wants to honor the stars of the first film who have passed away such as Bob Barker and Carl Weathers. “I would love Drew Carey to be in this movie out of respect to Bob,” Sandler said. “When we were writing stuff, Bob was alive. When we were writing stuff, Carl Weathers was alive. When we were writing stuff, Joe Flaherty was alive. It sucks, we love those guys. They were such a big part of the movie and just great people. But we’re going to get them involved somehow. They’ll be involved.”

Sander’s comments comes shortly after Christopher McDonald, who played Shooter McGavin in Happy Gilmore told Audacy’s 92.3 The Fan that Sandler presented him the script of the sequel.

“I saw Adam about two weeks ago, and he says to me, ‘McDonald, you’re gonna love this.’ I said, ‘What?’ He says, ‘How ’bout that,’ [and] he shows me the first draft of Happy Gilmore 2,” McDonald said. “Maybe you should cut that out because I don’t wanna be a liar, but he did show me that, and I thought, ‘Well, that would be awesome.’ So, it’s in the works. Fans demand it, dammit.”

According to Deadline, Happy Gilmore 2 will be distruited by Netflix, where Sander and his production company (Happy Maddison) have a long-term deal. The first film was distributed by Universal Pictures and made $39 million at the box office on a $12 million budget.

Happy Gilmore was released in 1996 and tells the story of a ice hockey player (Happy Gilmore) who discovers he has the talent to play golf. Happy plays in multiple golf tournaments to make as much money as he can to save his grandmother’s house from foreclosure.
