Apple renews Rose Byrne-led 'Physical' for a second season

Physical still hasn't unveiled its first season finale, but according to Deadline, Apple TV Plus has already renewed the 1980s-set series for a second season.

"We couldn’t be more proud to showcase Annie Weisman's singular take on this darkly funny, heartbreaking and bold story," Michelle Lee, Director of Domestic Programming at Apple TV+, said in a statement, per Deadline . "And then we got to watch Rose Byrne inhabit this incredible, multi-layered character, giving us an unforgettable tour de force performance. We have been thrilled to see audiences around the world fall in love and feel seen by this show and we can't wait for everyone to experience the next chapter in Sheila’s journey towards personal empowerment."

Weisman is the creator, executive producer and showrunner of Physical . The directors are Craig Gillespie, Stephanie Laing and Liza Johnson. The show's official description reads as follows: "Sheila Rubin (Byrne) is a quietly tormented housewife in ’80s San Diego, who, behind closed doors, battles extreme personal demons and a vicious inner voice. But things change when she discovers aerobics, sparking a journey toward empowerment and success."

More specifically, Sheila struggles with bulimia and is surprised when she becomes a star aerobics instructor at the same time her husband, Danny (Rory Scovel), is running for political office.

"It's about appearances and about how we all present a certain way, for men or women, as the human condition," Byrne told ET Canada in June. "We meet this woman at a breaking point, and she's obviously very ill. But you still, I hope, want to root for her despite a lot of her unconventional things she does and the way she behaves. She's kind of living in this space of a lie."

Physical debuted its first three episodes June 18, and a new episode has hit Apple TV Plus every subsequent Friday. The 10th and final installment of the season arrives this Friday (Aug. 6).
