'Bridesmaids' director recounts infamous food poisoning scene 10 years later

If you can believe it, Bridesmaids hit theaters 10 years ago today (May 13).

Paul Feig, who directed the Oscar-nominated comedy, revealed in a new Yahoo! interview that the film was first broached in 2006 before Judd Apatow and Kristen Wiig called him in 2010. The acclaimed filmmaker then divulged behind-the-scenes details about the infamous seven-minute sequence in which the cast suffered from extreme food poisoning.

"We [wanted] to make it outrageous, push the envelope, but never [wanted] to make it where you get bummed out like, 'Oh, the poor actors had to do this terrible stuff,'" Feig said, then added:

"We shot a lot of stuff, some stuff we didn’t use. There's one scene in particular after Ellie Kemper runs out of the bathroom after throwing up on Wendi's head where she realizes she has to throw up again and she thinks there's another bathroom at the end of the hallway and runs down, throws open the door to this very white office, which turns out to be ... the woman who owns the dress shop’s office, and projectile vomits across the office onto a picture of her wedding. We immediately went, 'OK, I think that was too much.'"

Melissa McCarthy was nominated at the 84th Academy Awards for best supporting actress, while Wiig and Annie Mumolo received a nod for best writing/original screenplay.

The instant classic also starred Maya Rudolph, Wendi McClendon-Covey, Rose Byrne, Rebel Wilson—who recently shared a commemorative ring Feig sent her and presumably the whole cast—Jon Hamm, and more.
