Daniel Radcliffe stifles hope of 20-year ‘Harry Potter’ reunion: 'No plans at the moment'
Daniel Radcliffe celebrated 20 years of Harry Potter on the cover of Empire earlier this year, and that might be the most public-facing way he commemorates the cinematic milestone.
November will mark exactly 20 years since Radcliffe debuted as the titular orphaned and uniquely gifted wizard in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, but the 31-year-old actor told Entertainment Tonight that there are "no plans at the moment" for a formal reunion.
"I'm in the Dominican Republic at the moment filming, and then I'm going to be busy—kind of working on bits and pieces until the end of the year," Radcliffe explained. "So, yeah, I don't know. I'm sure there will be some sort of celebration, but I don't know if we will be getting together or anything. I'm sorry if that's a bit of a disappointment to anyone."
Radcliffe is filming Lost City of D alongside Sandra Bullock, Brad Pitt and Channing Tatum.
The London native portrayed Harry for the duration of the seismic film franchise, adapted from J.K. Rowling's record-breaking novel series. Sorcerer's Stone was followed by Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002), Prisoner of Azkaban (2004), Goblet of Fire (2005), Order of the Phoenix (2007), Half-Blood Prince (2009), Deathly Hallows: Part 1 (2010) and Deathly Hallows: Part 2 (2011).
"I've seen bits on TV for seconds before I go, 'Uh!'" Radcliffe admitted, referencing whether he watches any of the legendary films. "Or if it's a scene that someone else is in I'll go, 'Oh, cool. But yeah, I have really, really fond memories of all my scenes with Gary Oldman and David Thewlis. They were some of the first scenes on the third and the fifth film where I started to feel like I was a young man who was just starting to figure out what acting was, and they were pretty cool people to be around."
Radcliffe has since immersed himself in a different fantasy by starring in TBS anthology series Miracle Workers. The Simon Rich creation, which counts Saturday Night Live boss Lorne Michaels as executive producer, explores a different predicament between Heaven and Earth.
The first season, premiering in 2019, positioned Radcliffe as low-ranking angel Craig, who must grant a seemingly impossible prayer in order for God to spare humankind. Last year's second season shifted into the Dark Ages, where Radcliffe played Prince Chauncley. Season 3 will premiere next Tuesday (July 13) and follow travelers on the Oregon Trail in 1844.
Radcliffe's Miracle Workers co-stars include Steve Buscemi, Geraldine Viswanathan, Karan Soni, Jon Bass and Lolly Adefope.
"I feel like [Buscemi] would've been a pretty good Sirius," Radcliffe told ET of the 63-year-old all-time great character actor. "Unfortunately, you are too young for Dumbledore, but one day you could have that quality, that sort of kind, warmth and all of that. I don't know. I think there are many roles for Steve in Potter."
