Peter Dinklage wonders why Disney hasn't addressed the use of dwarves in the live-action remake of 'Snow White'. SOPA Images

Disney responds to Peter Dinklage's criticisms of live-action 'Snow White' remake

Disney's forthcoming live-action remake of Snow White already has one disparaging review.

Four-time Emmy winner Peter Dinklage joined Marc Maron's WTF podcast for an episode released Monday (Jan. 24), and toward the end of their hour-plus conversation, Dinklage brought up the current state of comedy—"being afraid to be funny or being afraid to say something inappropriate, which is the basis of all humor" before noting that he has observed "hypocrisy" in the industry.

"Literally no offense to anything, but I was a little taken back by—they were very proud to cast a Latino actress as Snow White, but you're still telling the story of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs," he explained. "Take a step back and look at what you're doing there. That makes no sense to me because you're progressive in one way, but you're still making that f—king backward story of seven dwarfs living in a cave together? What the f—k are you doing, man? Have I done nothing to advance the cause from my soap box? I guess I'm not loud enough."

Dinklage added: "All love and respect to the actress and to the people who thought they were doing the right thing, but I'm just like, 'What are you doing?'"

In response, an unnamed Disney spokesperson has released a statement to Deadline: "To avoid reinforcing stereotypes from the original animated film, we are taking a different approach with these seven characters and have been consulting with members of the dwarfism community. We look forward to sharing more as the film heads into production after a lengthy development period."

The actress Dinklage was referring to is Rachel Zegler, whose casting as Snow White was first reported by Deadline in June 2021. Gal Gadot was attached as the Evil Queen by November.

Dinklage, 52, won his four Primetime Emmy Awards for his role of Tyrion Lannister on Game of Thrones.
