John Mulaney will return to standup this month after 60-day rehab stint

Distance certainly made John Mulaney's fans' hearts grow fonder.

The 38-year-old stand-up comedian will perform a new set titled John Mulaney: From Scratch at New York City's City Winery in Manhattan, and his May 10-14 dates are already sold out.

Page Six's Emily Smith first reported in late December that Mulaney was entering a Pennsylvania 60-day rehabilitation facility for alcohol and cocaine addiction.

"His fans know he’s struggled in the past with sobriety," an anonymous source told the outlet. "He has talked about it openly. Unfortunately, he has struggled again during the pandemic."

Smith was again the first to report Mulaney had checked out in late February and was "doing well" in an outpatient program.

Esquire's October 2019 cover story delved into Mulaney's long history with substance abuse since picking up alcohol at 13 years old:

"Throughout high school and college, Mulaney kept up his grades while routinely blacking out and doing embarrassing things that friends filled him in on later—going dead-eyed and slapping drinks out of people’s hands, downing a bottle of perfume once. He can pinpoint the day in August 2005 that he finally stopped doing coke, and the day the following month that he gave up alcohol. He was twenty-three. 'I went on a bender that weekend that was just, like, fading in and out of a movie,' he says. 'It was just crazy. A weekend that was . . . there were . . .' He grimaces. 'I’m never going to tell you. That’s mine. I didn’t kill anyone or assault anyone. But yeah, I was like, You're f—ing out of control. And I thought to myself, I don't like this guy anymore. I'm not rooting for him.' He didn’t use a recovery program—he was able to flip a switch, he says—and he's been sober ever since."

The Chicago native wrote on Saturday Night Live, then advanced his comedic profile with comedy specials The Comeback Kid (2015), Kid Gorgeous (2018)—earning him a Primetime Emmy—and John Mulaney & the Sack Lunch Bunch (2019).

Mulaney most recent work came in a voiceover role on Netflix animated comedy Big Mouth (2017-21), co-created and led by his close friend and frequent collaborator Nick Kroll.
