Joker: Folie à Deux has released two new images of Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga in costume as Joker and his lover Harley Quinn.
Posted by director Todd Phillips on Instagram, one of the shots show the pair posing in front of a black background. Joker’s dressed in darker colours, swapping the salmon pink blazer for a burgundy one, and the blue shirt for a white shirt and black tie.
Gaga’s Quinn, meanwhile, doesn’t bear much resemblance to her comic book counterpart, dressed in a flowery blouse. It's clearly a more grounded take on the villainous DC power couple.
The other image is a black and white shot of the pair dancing on a rooftop. It represents the film’s more avant-garde side. After all, Joker: Folie à Deux is said to be a musical.
Cinematographer Lawrence Sher does specify, however, that classification might not be entirely accurate.
In a video posted by Twitter account @Jokerfolienews, Sher says, “It’s not a musical per se, it just has music in it. The music is part of the film and the characters… but I don't know if it's a musical.”
Warner Bros.’ sequel to the 2019 supervillain origin story starring Joaquin Phoenix releases 4 October, 2024.
Meanwhile Todd Haynes and Joaquin Phoenix team up for a new film, which is set to shoot in Summer.
