Martin Scorsese and Paul Schrader developing series 'about the origins of Christianity'

Paul Schrader sat down for a lengthy conversation with Richard Brady of The New Yorker, published last week, and it ended on a high note when Brady asked the Oscar-nominated director and writer if he had entertained the possibility of creating a feature-length film or series for a streaming service.

"Well, Scorsese and I are planning something," Schrader admitted, "and it is ... it would be a three-year series about the origins of Christianity."

The 74-year-old elaborated after Brady asked whether the project will be fiction or drama: "It’s based on the Apostles and on the Apocrypha," he said. "It’s called The Apostles and Apocrypha. Because people sort of know the New Testament, but nobody knows the Apocrypha. And back in the first century, there was no New Testament, there’s just these stories. And some were true, and some weren’t, and some were forgeries."

Schrader confirmed it will be stylized in the same dramatized vein as 1988's The Last Temptation of Christ, which Scorsese directed—earning a best director Oscar nod—and Schrader wrote the screenplay for. The cast included Willem Dafoe as Jesus.

The iconic duo also joined forces to make Taxi Driver (1976) and Raging Bull (1980).

Schrader's Oscar nomination wouldn't come until 2019 for best original screenplay (2017's First Reformed).
