Marvel boss confirms Chris Evans will not reprise Captain America role

Let the fantasy go: Chris Evans will no longer play Captain America.

Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, would know.

"I rarely answer no to anything anymore because things are always surprising me with what happens, but that rumor, I think, was dispelled rather quickly by the man himself," Feige told Entertainment Weekly's Nick Romano.

Feige was presumably referring to Evans' tweet in mid-January following reports from Deadline that he was "expected to reprise the role in the MCU in some form":

Evans, 39, last played Captain America (also known as less iconic Steve Rogers) in Avengers: Endgame (2019)—capping a eight-film run with the character. In Endgame—the No. 2-grossing movie of all time at one point—Cap fittingly (and a bit controversially) remained in the 1940s with his love Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) while his shield was passed on to Sam Wilson/Falcon (Anthony Mackie)

Feige was speaking to EW in preparation for television series The Falcon and The Winter Solder to hit Disney Plus this Friday:

The Winter Soldier, also known as Bucky Barnes, is played by Sebastian Stan, who commented to EW about the incessant rumors swirling around Evans:

"Anything is possible, right? I saw he tweeted something about it. So, I don't know. I feel like usually he knows what to say in those things, so I didn't know what to make of it. And I truly don't have any intel on that. I feel like you can't ever think of the words 'Captain America' without thinking about Chris Evans. He's done such an amazing job with it, and I feel like he's always going to have this presence. And he has a presence in our show."

Mackie added that he has "no idea" what is going on with that, nodding toward Marvel's reputation for being "so secretive."

Here's what we do know: Evans will co-star alongside Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Cate Blanchett, and so many more A-listers in Adam McKay's Don't Look Up. He was also announced late last year to be taking over for Tim Allen in voicing Buzz Lightyear for Pixar's upcoming prequel Lightyear, which stirred up yet another controversy for Evans to clear up on social media.
