Morrissey calls out 'The Simpsons' for 'harshly hateful' parody in latest episode

Over more than 30 years, The Simpsons has lampooned everyone from politicians to celebrities to people who are too elitist about nerd culture. Most tend to take the mockery in stride, with many even counting it as a badge of honor, but singer Morrissey was extremely unhappy with the show's recent parody of him.

"Panic on the Streets of Springfield," the latest episode of The Simpsons, featured Lisa becoming imaginary friends with Quillougby, the brooding frontman of the late 80s band, the Snuffs. It's pretty obvious that the character is based on Morrissey and when Lisa heads to see the Snuffs reunite at Springfield's Bummershoot Festival, she is shocked to find that Quilloughby is now a bitter, bloated bigot who has denounced veganism.

The depiction clearly offended Morrissey, as his official Facebook page posted a status calling out the episode.

"Poking fun at subjects is one thing," the status says. "Other shows like SNL still do a great job at finding ways to inspire great satire. But when a show stoops so low to use harshly hateful tactics like showing the Morrissey character with his belly hanging out of his shirt (when he has never looked like that at any point in his career) makes you wonder who the real hurtful, racist group is here."

In the status, Morrissey also called out The Simpsons for its hypocrisy, noting Hank Azaria's recent public apology for voicing the character of Apu on the show.
