Being a fan of Spider-Man is great these days. There are plenty of comic books, movies, and video games based on the character that is always coming out at frequent intervals, but the next show featuring the wall-crawler is going to be unique. Sony has been working on its stand-alone Spider-verse films, with some TV shows also in the mix. After having voiced Spider-Man Noir in Into the Spider-Verse, it looks like Nicolas Cage may reprise the role in a live-action show soon.
According to studio sources speaking to The Ankler, the former Ghostrider is currently “in serious talks” with Sony for the lead role in the show. The series is being joint-produced by Sony and Amazon, taking place in its own universe set in the 1930s. Talk of the new show being developed first made the rounds early last year, and it seems like the involvement of Phil Lord and Chris Miller may be the deciding factor in convincing Cage to take on the role. Oren Uziel, who has worked on John Wick 4, Borderlands and 2021’s Mortal Kombat will be taking on the writing and executive producer duties on Spider-Man Noir.
Nicolas Cage is no stranger to comic-book movies, having starred as the lead in two Ghostrider films. The actor was set to take on the lead role in Tim Burton’s Superman Lives before it was scrapped and made a surprising cameo appearance as the last son of Krypton in 2023’s The Flash. He has also voiced Superman in Teen Titans Go! and played Big Daddy in Kick-Ass. Of course, it should be noted that just because the actor is in talks for the role doesn't mean the deal will be finalised.
Spider-Man: Noir isn’t the only live-action Spider-verse show in the works at Sony, with The Ankler reporting that work on ‘Silk: Spider Society’ has been paused. The writer's room for the show, which follows Korean-American heroine Cindy Moon was supposed to reconvene earlier this year. According to the report, the show is now being “refocused with a more male-skewing audience in mind.”
It remains to be seen whether these shows actually materialize, but given Sony's current trajectory with its live-action Spider-verse films, it's not looking great. To date, Sony's live-action Spider-Man-less universe consists of two Venom films, Morbius and Madame Web. All of these movies have been received with mixed-to-negative reception from critics and audiences alike, with Venom being the only franchise that has done well at the box office.
Sony’s latest Spider-verse film, Madame Web, is currently in theatres with Kraven The Hunter releasing on August 30, 2024.
