Susan Sarandon opens up about last conversation with ex David Bowie before his death

David Bowie was married to Iman until his death from cancer on Jan. 10, 2016, two days after he had turned 69 years old, but the five-time Grammy winner kept a soft spot in his heart for Susan Sarandon.

Bowie and Sarandon dated in the 1980s after co-starring in the 1983 horror flick The Hunger. In an interview with You, the Oscar-winning actress opened up about how she had reconnected with Bowie before he died.

"I was fortunate enough to be closer to him right before he died, the last couple of months," Sarandon revealed. "He did find me again. We talked to each other and said some things that needed to be said. I was so fortunate to be able to see him when he told me what was going on with him."

The 75-year-old then emphasized her love and respect for Iman, "someone who was so equal in stature" and "was clearly who he was destined to be with." Sarandon last saw Iman in December 2015 at the Lazarus premiere in New York City before having what would be her last conversation with Bowie:

"After the show I went to Lesbos. That was the toughest thing I’ve ever done: a never-ending stream of desperation with no recourse and no way to fix it. The camps were horrific. I wasn’t sleeping and I knew that I had to get up early to start meeting the boats as they came in, so I took some Ambien, a pretty strong sleep aid. And I had this dream that David had called me and that we’d had this conversation and as I hung up I thought [in the dream]: 'Nobody’s going to believe me, that David Bowie called me in Lesbos.' Then later, I thought: 'Did he actually call me?' And I went to my phone and he had. I have no recollection of what that conversation was. ... He died a week later. It’s all so frustrating."

Bowie married Iman in 1992. They welcomed their only child, a daughter named Alexandria, in August 2000. "David is in our hearts and minds on a daily basis, for all of us," Iman told Harper's Bazaar UK in January. "You know, this was my true love. My daughter once asked me if I would ever marry again and I said, 'Never.'"

Sarandon shares two sons, Miles, 29, and Jack, 32, with ex Tim Robbins, whom she met while filming the 1988 film Bull Durham. The high-profile activist previously had 36-year-old Eva with director Franco Amurri. She also discussed her only marriage—to Chris Sarandon, in college—earlier this year (h/t Today).
