Watch Sandra Bullock search for redemption in chilling 'The Unforgivable' trailer

Sandra Bullock was last seen in the 2018 Netflix thriller Bird Box, which feels like an eternity ago, but that time away is nothing compared to what her character in The Unforgivable has been through.

"Released from prison after serving a sentence for a violent crime, Ruth Slater (Sandra Bullock) re-enters a society that refuses to forgive her past," the official The Unforgivable synopsis explains. "Facing severe judgment from the place she once called home, her only hope for redemption is finding the estranged younger sister she was forced to leave behind."

Netflix dropped the official trailer for the chilling drama Tuesday:

In the trailer, we meet Ruth in prison. She receives a phone call from an anonymous person who promises her that she "will pay for what you did."

"I was in prison," Ruth reveals in a voiceover, atop footage of her re-entering society. "I just got out. I was there for 20 years."

We don't learn exactly what Ruth did to deserve such punishment, but she does confirm that it was not an accident. Anyway, her main concern now is finding her younger sister, Katie. We then see present-day Katie playing the piano while other people discuss whether Ruth is worthy of forgiveness, especially because "she walks around like it never happened."

Oh, yeah: Viola Davis, in all of her usual glory, headlines a supporting cast that also includes Jon Bernthal, Vincent D'Onofrio and Rob Morgan. Directed by Nora Fingscheidt and based upon the British miniseries Unforgiven, The Unforgivable was co-written by Peter Craig, Hillary Seitz and Courtenay Miles. Bullock is credited as a producer.

See it in select theaters beginning Nov. 24 and on Netflix beginning Dec. 10.
