Will Smith debuts as Venus and Serena's father in new 'King Richard' trailer

With three wildly successful children of his own, Will Smith had plenty of personal source material to draw upon for King Richard.

The biographical drama stars Smith as Richard Williams, the father and tennis coach of tennis superstars Venus and Serena Williams. Warner Bros. Pictures dropped the official trailer Wednesday (July 28):

Smith proudly shared the trailer to his Instagram:

Smith, 52, earned best actor Oscar nominations for Ali (2001) and The Pursuit of Happyness (2006).

In the King Richard trailer, a child protective services agent arrives at the Williams' home after receiving a call that "there was trouble in the house," which leads Richard to launch into an undeterred monologue.

"Now, I don't even mind you saying we hard on these kids," he says. "You know why? 'Cause we are! That's our job! To keep 'em off these streets. You wanna check on the kids? Let's check on the kids. We got future doctors, lawyers, plus a couple tennis stars in this house."

Elsewhere, Richard explains he "wrote me a 78-page plan for their whole career before they was even born" and encourages one of his daughters by tearfully imploring to her that she's not just going to represent herself by being great but "every little Black girl on Earth."

The trailer only lasts two minutes and 35 seconds long, but Smith absolutely dazzles in a way that projects we will have an acclaimed movie on our hands once it hits theaters (and HBO Max) on Nov. 19.

"Driven by a clear vision of their future and using unconventional methods, Richard has a plan that will take Venus and Serena Williams from the streets of Compton, California, to the global stage as legendary icons," reads the film's official description from Warner Bros. "The profoundly moving film shows the power of family, perseverance and unwavering belief as a means to achieve the impossible and impact the world."

Smith, Jada Pinkett Smith, Tim White and Trevor White are among King Richard's producers, with Serena Williams, Venus Williams and Isha Price serving as executive producers. Reinaldo Marcus Green directed from Zach Baylin's screenplay.

Tony Goldwyn, Aunjanue Ellis, Saniyya Sidney and Demi Singleton also star.
