Jane's Addiction was one of the progenitors of '90s alternative rock, and the band's 1991 farewell tour literally spawned Lollapalooza. Like many bands of the era, Jane's Addiction has been off and on (and off and on) in the new millennium, but things are at a nadir. That is to say, multiple lawsuits are now in the mix when it comes to the band.
It began with band members Dave Navarro, Eric Avery, and Stephen Perkins suing frontman Perry Farrell. The suit accuses Farrell of "assault, battery, intentional infliction of emotional distress, negligence, breach of fiduciary duty, and breach of contract." There is also a claim for $10 million in potential lost earnings. It all started with an incident at a show in Boston:
This incident led to the end of the band, and to the cancellation of a planned reunion tour. The suit also asserts the potential to make a new album, and to therefore profit off said album, ended with this incident. Other assertions being made vis-a-vis the lawsuit directed at Farrell include, "The problems with Perry’s performance would often worsen as the night wore on and he became more intoxicated" and that backstage Farrell threw "another unexpected punch at [Navarro], striking him on the left side of the face."
In response, Farrell has sued Navarro, Avery, and Perkins. This suit alleges "assault and battery, intentional and negligent inflection of emotional distress, and breach of contract." There is a lengthy assertion/explanation in this lawsuit as well. One thing asserted is that Navarro, Avery, and Perkins were involved in:
A years-long bullying campaign against Farrell involving harassing him onstage during performances, including, among other tactics, trying to undermine him by playing their instruments at a high volume so that he could not hear himself sing without blasting his own in-ear monitors at an unsafe level.
In the lawsuit you can also find Farrell's assertions regarding the evening in question in Boston. Needless to say, it's quite different from what the other (former) members of Jane's Addiction posit happened.
It's all quite messy, messier than most band dissolutions. We aren't even getting a music festival out of the end of Jane's Addiction this time. We'll see if they can come together and resolve these issues and get back on the road.
