'Supergirl' will reveal more about DCU's Krypton House of El
SUPERGIRL Will Reveal More About DCU Krypton’s House of El_1 DC Studios/DC Comics

One of the biggest shocks in James Gunn’s Superman came when he revealed that Kal-El’s parents, Jor-El and Lara, sent their infant son to Earth not just to save his life, but to conquer our world. In Jor-El’s own words, “Show no mercy” to its inhabitants. This revelation shook Clark, who believed his parents to be noble. Some fans believe Lex Luthor messed with the recorded message his parents left him. But not only did Mister Terrific debunk that theory, Gunn shot it down in real life, too. However, according to a Nerdtropolis interview with Supergirl actor David Krumholtz, via Comic Book Movie, there may yet be more to reveal about the House of El, and their intentions. Here’s what he had to say:

It’s very true to the graphic novel that it’s based on, Woman of Tomorrow. Which is great. I’m thrilled to be sort of the next piece of telling the story of Krypton and sort of further clarifying what the House of El is all about.

In the comics, Supergirl’s father, Zor-El, is the brother of Jor-El, Superman’s dad. He was one of the only people who believed his brother when he said that Krypton was doomed. He and his family survived Krypton’s initial destruction by inhabiting a separated chunk of the planet, known as Argo. But eventually, the citizens of Argo succumbed to Kryptonite poisoning. That’s when they sent their teenage daughter, Kara, to Earth. On Earth, she became Supergirl, working together with her cousin Superman. She never knew her uncle Jor-El, but if her species were genocidal conquerors, she would probably know.

Based on Krumholtz’s comments, maybe all Kryptonians are not alike. Perhaps Jor-El was the black sheep of the House of El. Or maybe his brother Zor was a pacifist, and didn’t align with the rest of his culture. Although the revelation about Jor-El in Superman was a shock to many, there are canon examples of Kal-El’s parents being less than great. In the Man of Steel comic reboot of the ’80s, Lara asks Jor-El if their son will grow up to conquer Earth, and mold humans to “proper Kryptonian ways.” Jor-El seems less enthused about the idea, but not outright disgusted. Smallville also suggested Jor-El wanted his son to take over the Earth. One way or another, Supergirl will definitely shed more light on the DCU version of Krypton.

Supergirl , directed by Craig Gillespie, hits theaters on June 26, 2026.
