Michael Schumacher is arguably the most influential Formula 1 driver of all time, his legendary years with Ferrari going down in the pages of history. Tragically, Schumacher suffered a near-fatal accident while skiing with his family in December 2013. The German legend fell into a coma, and remained near-unresponsive even after that.

Schumacher’s family was most affected but remained resilient, with brother Ralf Schumacher continuing to cover F1 and son Mick Schumacher going into the sport to follow in his father’s footsteps. Racing fans all over the world have been waiting for an update on Michael Schumacher’s condition, especially as a decade has now passed since the shocking incident.

Ralf Schumacher has finally provided an insight into Michael’s current state. Ralf said in a heart-wrenching interview that life could sometimes be unfair, as his 52-year-old brother continues the long journey to recovery. Ralf said nothing was the same as it had been before, though modern medicine salvaged some hope for Michael.

I miss my Michael from back then. Life is sometimes unfair. Michael had often been lucky in his life, but then came this tragic accident. Thank goodness we were able to do a lot thanks to modern medical possibilities, but still nothing is like it used to be. Ralf Schumacher said in an interview with German outlet Bild.

Sebastian Vettel, one of Michael’s closest friends on the F1 paddock, recently appreciated his compatriot’s lasting legacy in the sport and worldwide influence. Michael was one of Vettel’s most influential mentors and guided the young driver and helped harbour his talent, which eventually went on to win four world championships.

Jean Todt delivers unfortunate update on close friend Michael Schumacher

One of the only people other than the Schumacher to keep in touch with Michael Schumacher since his accident in 2013 is Jean Todt. Todt was the team principal at Ferrari during Michael’s iconic winning years and kept in contact with the German long after his stint with Ferrari ended with his first retirement in 2026.

Jean Todt has regularly visited Michael to check up on his close friend. Recently, after the ten-year anniversary of Michael’s accident, Todt offered an update on the 91-time race winner’s condition. Todt said that Michael would probably never be the same after the accident, though he is being given good care by his family.

He is simply not the Michael he used to be. He is different and is wonderfully guided by his wife and children who protect him. His life is different now and I have the privilege of sharing moments with him. That’s all there is to say. Jean Todt said, via L’Equipe

The seven-time world champion does watch his son Mick’s races regularly, despite his condition. Mick has heartwarmingly adopted his father’s racing initials MSC. Mick has not raced in F1 since being let go from Haas in 2022, but has joined Mercedes as a reserve driver.
