Alabama's Odds to Make College Football Playoffs Undergo Drastic Swing

The SEC is already poised to land three participants in the College Football Playoffs, and the chances that tally reaches four considerably increased on Monday, Dec. 2.

At 10-2 and occupying the No. 8 spot in the CFP standings heading into last weekend's slate, the Tennessee Volunteers are the odd-men out when it comes to the SEC Championship Game. However, that also makes it highly likely that they will slide into one of the 12 spots in the playoff field, as they have no more games to play before the proceedings begin.

Texas (11-1) will meet Georgia (10-2) in a rematch for the conference crown, and a blowout win by the Longhorns might mean the Bulldogs tumble far enough to fall out of the playoff picture. However, a close game and/or a Georgia win would render likely the outcome that both squads end up a part of the CFP field.

That leaves the three-loss Alabama Crimson Tide as the swing team. Alabama entered last weekend at 8-3 and sitting at 13th in the playoff picture -- one spot out of the field. However, after handling Auburn with relative ease in the Iron Bowl, the Crimson Tide's odds to make the playoffs swung drastically in their favor.

"Per [FanDuel Sportsbook] Alabama has moved from +100 to -186 to make the CFP today," Josh Pate of CBS Sports reported via X on Monday.

Alabama is now also finished with its schedule before the final CFP rankings are determined, which means the team's fate is no longer entirely in its own hands.

That said, conference championship games across the country will improve the standings of some CFP contenders and hurt the chances of others based on the outcome, which puts Alabama in a favorable position.

The next CFP rankings will be released by the committee on Tuesday.
