Andy Walker has claimed that Celtic would sell their surprise package of the season in Liam Scales, following his meteoric rise into the starting line-up. The Irishman was on his way out of the club after spending last year on a loan deal up at Pittodrie with Aberdeen – who were actually desperate to get the big defender back after a stellar campaign in the red of the Dons.
Scales has been one of the noticeable standouts since Brendan Rodgers came back to the club and had it not been for a defensive injury crisis back in August, Scales’ future might have looked very different indeed. After his baptism of fire at Ibrox against theRangers in a Celtic jersey, the left-sided player has gone from strength to strength and now the Celts want to deal him in for the long haul.
Despite this, the central defender – who can also play left-back – has been subject of interest from elsewhere in Europe which has come in the form of Anderlecht of Belgium. Celtic’s old European foes have been watching Scales closely with a view to making a bid for his services in the January transfer window, with the Republic of Ireland international only having 18-months left on the contract he signed back in 2021.
However, fellow Irishman, Rodgers, is eager to get the former Shamrock Rovers man tied down to a new contract and work with him some more well into the future. The manager even admitted that the 25-year-old has been the “biggest surprise of his career” after he went from heading out of the club to playing a starring role next to defensive stalwart Cameron Carter-Vickers. No doubt this new deal will help ward off any unwanted attention for Brendan Rodgers’ latest coaching triumph, although Walker insists the club would sell to Anderlecht if the right offer came in.
Speaking on The Go Radio Football Show, our former striker said: “The squad’s too thin for Champions League level. I think that has been proven over the five games that Celtic have played. I think they have competed, but not for 90 minutes. And just in general you look at the model of the club. Look at Liam Scales, there’s someone who I think has excelled this season and we are not even halfway through the season. But if someone was to come in with a big offer, Celtic would sell. That is what they have been doing through the years and that is what has made them successful in Scotland.”
