Happy birthday today to Brad Childress, Johnny Benson and Chuck Person. On this date in 1917 Hank Gowdy of the Boston Braves became the first baseball player to enlist to serve in World War I. Gowdy would go on to serve in the 42nd Infantry "Rainbow" Division before returning to baseball.
