Safety Jovante Moffett returns to the Cleveland Browns active roster to play against the Steelers Sunday.
The second-year player was in 9 games last year and saw some special teams action in Week 5.
Cleveland elevated Moffatt, along with cornerback Tim Harris Jr, from the practice squad.
This comes on the heels of another cornerback signing Friday.
Herb Miller, who played in the Arizona and Denver games, signed an active roster contract Friday.
All three moves offset some depth concerns in the Browns secondary.
Cleveland ruled out Denzel Ward for the Pittsburgh game after he suffered a hamstring injury last week.
And the team benched rookie Richard LeCounte for unspecified disciplinary purposes.
On top of that, cornerback AJ Green has a groin injury and is listed as questionable.
While the roster numbers even out, the experience level does not.
What It Means For the Browns
Neither Javonte Moffett nor Tim Harris has been on the field for an NFL defensive play in their young careers.
Moffatt’s professional experience includes 116 special teams snaps, which is about 100 more than Harris.
But Moffatt saw considerable time with the Browns’ preseason defense.
He was among the first players added to the practice squad after the final roster cuts.
It would not be surprising if Moffatt is limited to special teams Sunday, since that has been LeCounte’s role, too.
LeCounte saw only 5 defensive snaps in Week 1 and was inactive for 3 of the first 7 games.
Harris needed three years to play his senior college season, redshirting injured twice.
Then he spent his rookie season on the San Francisco 49ers’ injured reserve.
Could Miller See Action at Cornerback?
Herb Miller played in parts of 4 games for the 2020 Super Bowl Champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
He was credited with 5 solo tackles and intercepted a pass for Tom Brady‘s team.
But Bruce Arians did not use him during the postseason.
Miller was a final cut this preseason and signed with the Browns’ practice squad later in September.
It will help the secondary if the offense controls the ball as well as it has lately.
Starting corners Greg Newsome and Greedy Williams might play every snap.
Slot corner Troy Hill can also spell an outside corner here and there, with safety Grant Delpit handling the inside role.
But Miller will be ready if called upon.
