The Phoenix Mercury continues to leave a lasting impact on the young kids who share the same passion for basketball here in the Valley and a program of theirs has received a big boost thanks to Phoenix Suns guard Devin Booker.

Growing the Game

Announced by the Mercury, Booker has formed a collaboration with the Junior Mercury Legacy League, an all-female basketball league.

“We established the Jr. Mercury Legacy League to grow the game for young girls in The Valley,” the Mercury said on X (formerly Twitter). “With [Mercury/Suns majority owner] Mat Ishbia’s investment into the next generation, we’ve been able to create an all-female league for girls to embrace their physical strength. Inspired by the Mercury, Devin Booker has officially joined us as an All-Star Ambassador – investing and gifting more than 200 Nike shoes.”

Included in the string of X posts from this announcement, Booker will also help young female athletes by gifting 1,000 scholarships before the end of this year, 2024.

The Junior Mercury Legacy League is going to expand its reach to all eight YMCAs across the state of Arizona.

“We have over 220 girls participating in the league, and adding on to it this year is Devin Booker, “Valley of the Sun YMCA vice president of operations and programs Garrett Brolsma said. “All of our kids are going to get shoes and financial contributions that have been made to the program as well as expand our scholarship. This program is meant to leave a legacy and last a lifetime.”

As for the Phoenix Mercury, they will begin its 2024 season on May 14 against the reigning WNBA champions, the Las Vegas Aces.
