Former Iceland international and Everton midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson has reportedly been cleared after a year-long police investigation.

In July 2021, an unnamed 31-year-old Everton player was arrested on suspicion of sexually assaulting a minor. The player was consequently suspended at Everton.

Now Fotbolti reports local media has obtained a press release from Manchester police, stating the former Everton player has been acquitted.

"The 33-year-old man, who was arrested in connection with an investigation from June 2021, has been acquitted of his charges.

"The investigation team and the state prosecutor have worked together and have jointly come to the conclusion that there is currently insufficient evidence," read the statement.

According to Fotbolti, the player in question was Gylfi Sigurdsson, who has 78 Icelandic international matches on his CV.

The Icelander has been without a club since the summer of 2022, having left Everton when his contract expired.
