The defense for the Indiana football program didn’t live up to its early hype but there were still some standout performers on the field. One player was Andre Carter, one of the most notable additions the Hoosiers added through the transfer portal last offseason.

And, although his performance this year may have flown under the radar for some, after all of the dust settled following the end of the college football season — Carter’s performance was among the best in the country.

According to Pro Football Focus, Carter’s 87.8 run defense grade last year was first among all edge rushers in college football.

The 6-foot-5 and 273-pound lineman finished the season with 49 tackles, 11 tackles for loss and two sacks. He also finished eight in the Big Ten in total QB pressures.

He was named to an honorable mention for the All-Big Ten Defense following the 2023 season. He was also named All-Big Ten Third-Team by Phil Steele.

Carter’s versatility allowed him to play numerous positions on the line.

“He’s a big strong guy, so we look at matchups every single week and where we can best utilize his skill set,” Former Indiana defensive coordinator Matt Guerrieri said this season. “Some packages he’s on the edge. Some packages he’s on the inside. We’ve had a little bit of that all year then each week we say this is our favorite attack. We bumped him in and he did a good job. He’s got skills in both places.”

Carter spent just one season in Bloomington after a successful career at Western Michigan. In total, Carter played in 96 games across six seasons. He collected 184 tackles, 40 tackles for loss and 16 sacks.
