Jalen Hurts ended Sunday night in a familiar situation.
He gave a valiant effort for the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LVII against the Kansas City Chiefs, but the Eagles’ defense could not stop Patrick Mahomes. It was reminiscent of the 2017 College Football Playoff National Championship Game (2016 season) between Alabama and Clemson. Hurts, who was a freshman then, left the field in the fourth quarter after giving the Crimson Tide a 31-28 lead. Deshaun Watson got the ball last on the Tigers’ final drive, and the Tide could not stop him.
Hurts watched Alabama suffer a 31-35 loss to Clemson, and now he saw Philadelphia take a 35-38 loss.
Hurts put on a show for fans at State Farm Stadium, posting 304 passing yards, 70 rushing yards, and four total touchdowns.
He made big-time throws all game, connecting with eight receivers. Hurts and DeVonta Smith connected seven times for 100 receiving yards while A.J. Brown had 96 yards and a touchdown. Hurts set a Super Bowl record for rushing touchdowns by a quarterback (three) and tied the overall record by a player. He showed the world he can dominate on a marquee stage.
The loss will sting for a while, but Hurts will be back.
