Dallas Mavericks Head Coach Jason Kidd has made some comments surrounding Duke star Cooper Flagg in recent days. Here’s an in-depth look at Kidd, 52, and his comments about Flagg, 18, along with the Mavericks’ potential use of Flagg.

Jason Kidd’s Comments On Cooper Flagg

Just days after the Dallas Mavericks shockingly won the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft Lottery, Kidd shared his thoughts on the “DLLS Mavs” podcast. Kidd didn’t name-drop Cooper Flagg, but said, “We love that kid from Duke … Been studying him a little bit, so that’s the answer. … Right now, I’m studying the young man that used to play at Duke.”

Anything could happen, but the Mavericks would shock the NBA world if the team doesn’t select Flagg with the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. Flagg has been a consensus No. 1 pick, even before he wore a Duke Blue Devils uniform for the first time. Flagg’s presence has positively impacted not just Duke men’s basketball, but also the upcoming NBA Draft class.

Jason Kidd Adds Cooper Flagg to the Mix

Jason Kidd is responsible for the Dallas Mavericks’ lineup. Kidd explained on the “DLLS Mavs” podcast how he’d envision Cooper Flagg fitting into the Mavericks’ lineup. Kidd unofficially inserted Flagg into the team’s lineup at the shooting guard position, a possible glimpse into the team’s future in case the Mavericks fans were wondering.

Kidd said on the podcast, “I see a young man who is only 18 years old, who can do a lot of things. He won’t be 19 until December, which is really surprising. I think that being able to play 2 through 4 in today’s game, you might be able to sneak around the five if you want to label him a position player. But maybe there is still some growth. Only being 18, he can still grow here.”

Jason Kidd added, “I think you play him at the two, with the ability to shoot the ball and put it on the floor. As I talked about, we can have a big group out there that can start.” Kidd’s envisioning seems like a good idea. The potential combination of Kyrie Irving, Cooper Flagg, PJ Washington, Anthony Davis, and Dereck Lively II would draw attention to an athleticism, defense, and length mix that could help the Mavericks become powerful.

Final Thoughts

The Dallas Mavericks have some good pieces, and Cooper Flagg could be a good fit for the Mavericks. Flagg’s focus reportedly remains steady as the circumstances surrounding him might change. However, Flagg might play alongside Mavericks center and fellow Duke alum Dereck Lively II, whose advice and experience could help Flagg succeed in the NBA.
