Jim Harbaugh and the Los Angeles Chargers help continue an epic legacy at Notre Dame Football. Joe Alt, the consensus top offensive tackle in the class and former Fighting Irish superstar is officially off the board at pick five of the 2024 NFL Draft to the Los Angeles Chargers!

Joe Alt becomes the 17th Notre Dame offensive lineman to be selected in round one of the NFL Draft. That moves the Fighting Irish up to 10 offensive lineman taken inside the first ten picks of the NFL Draft. That is just one pick away from the all-time NFL Draft record currently held by USC (11 top ten offensive lineman selected)!

At 6'9", 321 pounds Joe Alt posted a 92nd percentile A to Z Sports Athletic Composite Score at the NFL Combine. He uses his freak athleticism, size, and length to dominate in pass protection on a wildly consistent basis. Alt only allowed one sack over the last two years (over 1600 snaps) and posted a 99% pass block efficiency mark in both those years as well via PFF.

The Chargers were in desperate need of an extra offensive tackle. It's not set in stone as to which tackle spot Alt will play exactly, but he should fit on either side. If he does play on the left side like he did for Notre Dame that would allow Rashawn Slater to switch back to his natural position of right tackle where he played many of his snaps at Northwestern.

This selection certainly makes it look like the Chargers and Jim Harbaugh will be firmly committing to the run game given their severe need at wide receiver still. At least Justin Herbert will be protected now when they do choose to pass.
