Friday was a special day for Michigan football fans. We watched many of our favorite players achieve their dreams and get drafted into the NFL.
As awesome as it was to see J.J. McCarthy get selected in the first round of the NFL draft by the Vikings. That’s a perfect fit and McCarthy will take the league by storm next season — that’s my prediction at least.
However, Friday was more about the entire Michigan football program. In the second round, Mike Sainristil and Kris Jenkins went with back-to-back picks. Mikey was also called the “pound-for-pound the best player in this draft” by Nick Saban, the man who Michigan football retired after the Rose Bowl.
Former Michigan football head coach “emotional” on draft day
Junior Colson went to former Michigan football head coach Jim Harbaugh early in round three, which prompted Harbaugh to sing “Hail to the Victors.” Harbaugh also said to local reporters that watching all the Wolverines come off the board (3 in a row at one point) was “emotional.”
Hopefully, Michigan football will set the draft record on Saturday. The Wolverines need nine more selections but the following names could all be picked: Trevor Keegan, A.J. Barner, Cornelius Johnson, Trente Jones, LaDarius Henderson, Karsen Barnhart, Jaylen Harrell, Braiden McGregor, Josh Wallace, Michael Barrett, and Drake Nugent.
Juwan Howard is back in the NBA
After being relieved of his duties as Michigan basketball head coach, you had a feeling Juwan Howard would land on his feet. He was a long-time assistant in the league and even had interest in him as an NBA head coach when he took the Michigan job.
There were even multiple rumors about NBA interest during his tenure. Juwan can still have a successful coaching career. Let’s not forget, he won a Big Ten title and made the Sweet 16 twice. He wasn’t a total failure.
Next season, Juwan will be back in the league with the Nets and it’s good to see the Michigan man land on his feet. I hope he gets another shot to be a head coach. The NBA always seemed like a better fit for him. Juwan is a good coach but struggled with roster management in college basketball.
That’s not an issue in the NBA and I wish Juwan nothing but the best going forward.
