It’s been a rough week for Michigan football running back recruiting, but there is at least a glimmer of positive news on Saturday.

Despite Marquise Davis choosing Kentucky over Michigan football earlier this week, plus Bo Jackson putting a huge damper on the Wolverines’ chances by not planning an official visit, U-M is still in it for a top-ranked running back in the 2025 class — Jordon Davison.

Davison is ranked 96th overall in the 2025 class according to the 247 Sports composite rankings. He’s the seventh-ranked running back and is out of the powerhouse Mater Dei in California.

Michigan football has made some headway since the hire of Tony Alford. At least enough progress to make the top four for Davison which the Wolverines did on Saturday along with Ohio State, Alabama, and Oregon.

Where Michigan football stands with Davison

However, just because the Wolverines are in the top four, doesn’t mean they have a realistic shot of landing Davison. Ohio State is the crystal ball favorite right now with two projections in their favor. Oregon and Alabama have been tough to beat and it’s hard to see Michigan winning here due to NIL.

It’s hard enough to land top-100 recruits but when you are going up against three of the biggest pay-for-play machines in college football, it makes it even more difficult especially for Michigan.

Never say never in recruiting. Marquise Davis taught us that lesson once again, but I have a hard time seeing Michigan win this recruitment. I think they are fourth among the finalists, which is why I didn’t include Davison when I talked about what’s next for running back recruiting in the 2025 class.

Things can change but I have a hard time seeing this one going the Wolverines’ way, even if they are still in the mix.
