A Michigan football assistant finds himself in hot water as Greg Scruggs, the newly hired defensive line coach of the Michigan Wolverines was arrested on Saturday for driving a motor vehicle while intoxicated.

The arrest was reported by Angelique Chengelis of The Detroit News and was confirmed by a University of Michigan official.

“I can confirm he was arrested for OWI by our department just before 3 a.m.,” Chris Page, strategic communications manager for the Ann Arbor Police Department, sent in a text to The Detroit News on Saturday.”

“A police report is not yet available but has been requested by The News. Michigan has not immediately provided comment. Penalties for an OWI offense include up to 93 days in jail, a $100-500 fine, and up to six months suspension of a driver’s license. While a senior football player at the University of Louisville, Scruggs was arrested on a DUI charge in 2011 and dismissed from the team before the Belk Bowl.”

It’s disappointing and a bad look for Michigan football. Who knows what this will mean for Scruggs but the last thing Sherrone Moore needs is his new defensive line coach, who has been building relationships with current players and recruits, in any sort of trouble.

Greg Scruggs has been suspended by Michigan football

As a result of the arrest, Scruggs has been suspended, indefinitely, while the school investigates what happened. “Greg made an unfortunate mistake and was arrested for operating a vehicle while intoxicated. He made no excuses and has taken accountability for his actions. The football program and athletic department have suspended Greg indefinitely while we review details of the incident,” Moore said via a statement.
