Following the conclusion of Brian Newberry's first season at the helm of the Navy Midshipmen, the head coach announced that his team will need a new offensive coordinator.

Newberry and Navy Athletics released a statement Friday afternoon stating that OC Grant Chesnut would not return to the team.

"As the head coach my job is to constantly evaluate every part of our program, starting with myself and the rest of our staff," Newberry said in the statement. "Every decision I make is purely about what's best for our program and our players. These decisions can sometimes be very difficult, but are necessary. This is a results-oriented business and we did not effectively produce on the offensive side of the ball the way we expect or need to. I am grateful for Coach Chesnut's hard work and service to our program over the past year. We wish him and his wonderful family all the best moving forward."

Chesnut just completed his first season with Navy as the OC and offensive line coach. He had previously been in the same role at Kennesaw State since 2014.

Navy finished the 2023 season with a 5-7 overall record and a 4-4 record in the AAC. The Midshipmen averaged 17.7 points per game, just 0.4 points more than the league-worst East Carolina Pirates. Navy were also second-worst in the league in total offense with 300.3 yards per game. Navy reached the red zone a league-worst 29 times, scoring points on just 20 trips, with 14 touchdowns.

Navy has announced that a national search for an offensive coordinator will begin immediately.
