Jerry Kill is expected to step down as Head Coach of the New Mexico State Aggies.
According to 24/7 Sports’ Chris Hummer, Jerry Kill is expected to step down from his position as Head Coach of New Mexico State.
The shocking news comes just days after the school’s loss against Fresno State in the New Mexico Bowl. Despite the bowl game loss, Kill led the Aggies to the school’s first 10-win season since 1960, which included a drubbing of SEC powerhouse, the Auburn Tigers while being 20-plus point underdogs.
The 62-year old was only in his second season in Las Cruces, but publicly dealt with health issues, including epilepsy in his past, though no official word has been made on the reasoning for his sudden departure.
Jerry Kill’s Coaching History
Jerry Kill began his coaching career at Pittsburg State in Pittsburg, Kansas, serving as the school’s Defensive Coordinator from 1985 until 1987. Kill began rising through the ranks after a seven season stint as Souther Illinois’ Head Coach from 2001 through 2007, before accepting Northern Illinois’ head coaching vacancy in 2008, a role he’d hold until 2010. The Cheney, Kansas native would have a successful five-year tenure as the Minnesota Golden Gophers head ball coach from 2011 through 2015 before taking a season off to deal with his aforementioned health issues. Kill would return to the sidelines in 2017, where he’d become Rutgers’ Offensive Coordinator and Quarterbacks Coach before taking another year off in 2018. During his most recent coaching run, Kill was an assistant at Virginia Tech in 2019, then TCU in 2020, before serving as the Horned Frogs’ interim Head Coach in 2021, before ultimately departing for New Mexico State in 2022.
