On Monday, Joe Tipton of On3 reported that Oklahoma guard Otega Oweh plans to enter the transfer portal. He spent his freshman and sophomore season in Norman with the Sooners, and now will get his pick of his next program to play for. The 6-foot-5 guard averaged 11.4 points per game and 3.8 rebounds per game this past season.
Oweh hits transfer portal
In non-conference play, Oweh thrived for Oklahoma. As time rolled on, his production and minutes per game continued to drop. The former four-star recruit provided less of an impact, leading to a lesser role as the season wound down.
While his impact from the beginning of the season will be missed, this provides the Sooners another scholarship to work with to potentially land a more consistent guard to pair with Javion McCollum. Oweh also gets the opportunity to find a fresh start, potentially one with more opportunity for him to pan out fully.
Where does Sooners roster stand?
With the news of Oweh’s transfer, the Sooners will now see four different Sooners departing. He’s the first, being a transfer player, with the three others graduating. The three players running out of eligibility are Rivaldo Soares, Le’Tre Darthard and Maks Klanjseck.
Evidently, the Sooners are losing guard play, but will have the opportunity to replace such in the transfer portal. Moser and the Sooners are also bringing in two recruits, those being guard Dayton Forsythe and forward Kuol Atak. The two additions should be able to provide depth and an instant impact for the Sooners.
With two players coming in and four leaving, the Sooners have two additional roster spots to use in the transfer portal, somewhere they can address two big needs.
What should Oklahoma do with roster openings?
With one guard coming in and three leaving, the Sooners should use one of the two openings to address an additional perimeter player. It’s no secret Javian McCollum is incredible. He averaged 13.3 points per game in his 30 starts on the season, and the team was much better when he was healthy. Pairing another veteran guard capable of scoring from the perimeter would greatly open things up for the Sooners.
On top of bringing in another guard, the Sooners should look to add another big man. John Hughley getting hurt messed things up in the rotation, so providing additional depth at the position would be huge. Brandon Garrison, a former Oklahoma preps athlete and McDonald’s All-American, is in the transfer portal after one season with Oklahoma State. He is an obvious Sooners target, as they offered him out of high school, but there is plenty of big men they can pursue out of the portal.
For Moser, who’s Oklahoma team narrowly missed the NCAA Tournament, addressing these needs could be huge for a team looking to make it’s first tournament appearance under his leadership.
