Reports early in the week indicated that University of Georgia running backs coach was a frontrunner to land the head coach job at Georgia State University. More details on the coaching search and hiring process were reported on Friday.

Matt Zenitz of 247Sports reported that initial interviews were completed on Tuesday with McGee, former Florida A&M head coach Willie Simmons, and Texas A&M Assistant/former Duke running backs coach Trooper Taylor. ESPN's Pete Thamel reported that McGee was now the "focus" of the coaching search and the other finalists had been informed they were not going to be hired. Thamel added that a deal should be finalized in the coming days.

McGee has spent the last eight years as an assistant at Georgia, where he won two national championships. McGee, a native of the state of Georgia, was also an accomplished high school head coach in the state of Georgia and a former assistant at Georgia Southern under Willie Fritz.

McGee would replace Shawn Elliott, who resigned his position earlier this month to join the South Carolina staff as tight ends coach.
