Just when the college football coaching carousel had stopped turning, it's beginning to pick up speed again.

Matt Zenitz of 247Sports reported Thursday morning that Georgia State Panthers head coach Shawn Elliott will be leaving his post to become an assistant at South Carolina once again.

Elliott spent 2010-2016 at South Carolina as the offensive line coach and, at one point, co-offensive coordinator. Elliott, a Camden, SC native, was also the Gamecocks' interim head coach in 2015 following the departure of Steve Spurrier.

From there, Elliott was hired at Georgia State in 2017 as the program's second head coach. 2017 was also the program's first winning season after its start at the FBS level in 2013. Elliott guided the Panthers to five winning seasons during his tenure.

Elliott would mark the third G5 head coach to resign his position this cycle in favor of an assistant position at a Power Five school. Former South Alabama head coach Kane Wommack and former Buffalo head coach Maurice Linguist both joined Kalen DeBoer's Alabama staff this cycle after resigning their positions.

In seven seasons as Georgia State's head coach, Elliott was 41-44 overall with a 4-1 record in bowl games. The Panthers were 7-6 in 2023 and picked up a win over Utah State in the Potato Bowl.
