Last month, Robert Griffin III signed a multi-year deal with ESPN to become an analyst for college football and the NFL. His decision came after going unsigned during this past offseason. However, the former Heisman Trophy winner has not given up his desire to return to the playing field.
Appearing on The Adam Schefter Podcast , Griffin acknowledged he is continuing to train with hopes of playing in the NFL again. He’s also open to returning to the team that drafted him in 2012, the Washington Football Team.
“That would have to be something that Coach Ron Rivera and the team would be open to,” Griffin said. “You never say never. Would I be open to it? Yeah, I would love to go back and be able to have that come full circle. But am I begging for that or pleading for that? Nah. But if your guy goes down, make the call. Wouldn’t it be a great story?”
Earlier this month, Griffin hinted interest in playing for Washington just moments after starting quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick was knocked out of their season opener against the Los Angeles Chargers with a hip injury.
Washington’s head coach Ron Rivera has stressed the team is confident in their current quarterback room. Taylor Heinicke has been named the starter while Kyle Allen will be the backup. Both have extensive familiarity of offensive coordinator Scott Turner’s system.
Griffin was the second overall draft pick in 2012 by Washington. He captivated an entire city and fan base, winning NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year. However, his magical rookie season was marred by a torn ACL injury in a playoff loss to the Seattle Seahawks.
Ultimately the injury helped change the complexion of his career. After struggling in 2013 and 2014 with injuries and poor play, Griffin was benched in 2015 in favor of Kirk Cousins and Washington never turned back, releasing Griffin.
Griffin signed with the Cleveland Browns in 2016 but was out of the league the following season. He signed with the Baltimore Ravens in 2018 playing the past three seasons as a backup to Lamar Jackson.
