Homeowners are choosing smart locks over electronic locks time and time again—in fact, more than 12 million households have already made the switch. As digital technology advances and homeowners adapt to develop a robust smart home hub, it's easy to understand why consumers shift to upgrade their standard locks for an added level of security.

Understanding the Category: Smart vs. Electronic Locks

"Smart locks offer advanced security features, providing comprehensive control over home access," shares Tim Eskew, Sr. Manager – IoT Partnerships at Allegion. "Models like the Schlage Encode Plus™ Smart WiFi Deadbolt allow homeowners to remotely lock and unlock their doors from anywhere, provide personalized codes for family members and guests, and feature an audit trail of lock activity – all within the Schlage Home app. Moreover, this smart lock supports Apple home keys, which leverage Apple iPhones and Apple Watches for proximity-based locking and unlocking. It also integrates seamlessly with voice assistants like Alexa and Google Assistant for convenient voice control."

Electric locks is a broader term, but as you're comparing products, note that all keyless door locks have smart features. To distinguish, keyless locks that aren't smart locks because still require some type of physical action; they're a wireless connection, but they don't function over Wi-Fi. To unlock, the user needs to engage with the keypad to enter a PIN code. Setting new codes must be done manually, not via an app, making this type of lock more inconvenient for homeowners on the go.

Making the Switch From Traditional Lock and Key

  • Enhanced security. Electronic door locks can provide advanced security features such as encryption, tamper alerts, and unique access codes. Smart lock models even offer remote control access, built-in cameras, remote locking, and remote monitoring via app, delivering homeowners greater peace of mind compared to traditional door locks. Two-factor authentication can also be set up for a smart lock.
  • Convenience. Electronic locks eliminate the need for physical keys, allowing homeowners to enter their property with ease using keypads, smartphones, or key fobs. This convenience is especially valuable for families with multiple members or individuals prone to losing keys. Many homeowners also find it very convenient to enable temporary access for visitors, such as housekeepers, babysitters, and contractors. Smart door locks take it a step further by allowing homeowners to extend access even while they're away from the home.
  • Remote access control. Mechanical locks could never. Smart lock systems can be managed using remote control capabilities via a smartphone app or web interface, enabling homeowners to lock and unlock their doors from anywhere. This feature is particularly useful for granting access to guests or service providers when away from home.
  • Customizable access. Electronic locks often support multiple user codes, allowing homeowners to assign unique access codes to family members, friends, or temporary guests. This level of customization reduces potential security risks and simplifies access management. And, simply put, it's something a traditional deadbolt can't do.
  • Integration with Smart Home Systems. Secure locks can seamlessly integrate with smart home ecosystems, enabling homeowners to automate door locking/unlocking, receive notifications, and integrate with other smart devices for enhanced security and convenience.
  • Keyless entry options. With smart and electric locks, homeowners can opt for keyless entry methods such as biometric scanners (fingerprint or facial recognition) or proximity sensors (Bluetooth or NFC), offering an additional layer of security and convenience. Not only are these additional security features useful for front, back, and garage doors, but many homeowners also find them to be better than keyed locks when it comes to increasing the levels of security for private offices, guest rooms, rented spaces, or if they run an Airbnb.
  • Activity tracking. Many smart locks offer activity logs or notifications, allowing homeowners to monitor who enters and exits their property and at what times. This additional feature can be valuable for security purposes and for keeping track of household activity.
  • Increased property value. Upgrading to electronic locks can enhance the perceived value of a property, especially in the eyes of tech-savvy buyers who prioritize extra security features.

What happens to a smart lock during a power outage?

Check the manufacturer's guide to see what your product features include. Most smart locks run on battery power, and some smart deadbolt locks also include a conventional key. "This means that even in the event of a power failure or disruption with the internet connection, your lock will continue to function without interruption," reassures Eskew. "With the touchpad feature, you can easily lock or unlock the door without worrying about being locked out or leaving your home vulnerable to unauthorized access."
