Louisville Cardinals Track & Field Teams Finish Strong at Rod McCravy Memorial Invite
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville track & field teams put on an impressive performance at the Rod McCravy Memorial Invite, which took place at the Norton Healthcare Sports and Learning Center. The Cardinals secured eight podium finishes and witnessed 12 athletes achieve personal-best marks over the two-day event.
Director of track & field and cross country Joe Franklin expressed satisfaction with the team’s progress, stating, “I thought we saw some encouraging performances this weekend, particularly in the field events. We saw some of the top performances in the NCAA from Jeremiah [Willis] and Jake [Burkey] last night, and we continue to compete well with the rest of our jumps group as well as in the pole vault.”
In the men’s invitational pole vault, Ty McPhail and Cade DeWitt continued their early-season success, both clearing 5.18m (17-0) to secure second and third place, respectively.
Following outstanding performances in the long jump events on Friday, the Cardinals achieved two third-place finishes in the triple jump on Saturday. Riley Burger leapt 12.24m (40-2) in the women’s triple jump event, while Grigoris Nikolaou recorded a mark of 14.93m (48-11.75) in the men’s iteration of the event.
The Cardinals wrapped up their weekend in the field with two more fifth-place finishes. Jayden Ulrich made her Louisville debut in the women’s shot put, achieving a mark of 15.97m (52-4.75), while Paul Kallenberg cleared a bar of 4.58m (15-0.25) in the men’s unseeded pole vault.
On the track, McKenzie Bell impressed in the women’s 400m, clocking a time of 56.68 to claim third place. Trevor Holbrook followed suit in the men’s 400m, finishing in third place with a time of 49.69.
Franklin acknowledged that there is still work to be done but praised the coaching staff and student athletes for their progress, stating, “While we do have work to do to get to where we want to be as a team, I think our coaching staff and our student athletes can be pleased with where we are at this point in the season.”
The Cardinals will be back in action on Friday, Jan. 19, at the Bellarmine Open, which is scheduled to take place at the Norton Healthcare Sports and Learning Center.
