White smoke blew over Sistine Chapel on Thursday as the new pope was elected, one day after the papal conclave met to deliberate on who would become the new leader of the Catholic Church.
Chicago-born Cardinal Robert Prevost was chosen as the new pope, becoming the first American pope in history.
Soon after it was officially announced, Chicago social media went crazy showing their support, including Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson.
"Everything dope, including the Pope, comes from Chicago," Mayor Johnson posted on X. "Congratulations to the first American Pope Leo XIV! We hope to welcome you back home soon."

Prevost attended Villanova University and Catholic Theological Union in Chicago before going on to earn his doctorate in canon law from the Pontifical College of St. Thomas Aquinas in Rome.
Not only is Pope Leo XIV a Chicago-native, he also is a Chicago Cubs fan, as announced by ABC News on the television broadcast, but it's unknown if the new pope holds any allegiances to other Chicago sports teams.
Regardless, amid the celebrations on social media, the Chicago Bears began catching strays with people making fun of the team. Tweets such as NFL content creator Annie Agar saying "Chicago produced a Pope before a QB who throws for 4000 yards" began circulating on X along with a few others. Here are some of the best posts directed at the Bears.

At the end of the day, this is a big moment for the entire city of Chicago being able to claim the new pope. And it continues the trend of good things on the horizon for this great city. Hopefully some of that good luck rubs off on the Bears in the near future.
