While college sports fans are used to seeing the SEC dominate the college football rankings, they're still getting accustomed to seeing the SEC's basketball programs at the top of the Associated Press poll.
Four of the top five teams in college basketball reside in the SEC with Auburn taking the No. 1 spot followed by Alabama, Florida and Tennessee - with Duke the only team standing in the way at No. 3. The conference's dominance, though, has given way to .500 basketball since January 4 for a very obvious reason that wasn't clear to at least one person.
During a Tuesday night game between Alabama and Texas, ESPN broadcaster Karl Ravech - who is known for his baseball expertise - made a blunder that fans couldn't quite forget.
“We know how dominant they were in the non-conference part of the season, the SEC,” Ravech said on Tuesday night. “They were 185-23. Since January 4, into Tuesday, the SEC teams are 82-82. It’s not as if one team or two teams or three — they’re 82-82. There’s been no ability pull away, there’s no dominant group of teams.”

So why is the SEC 82-82 since the start of January? Well, that's when conference play kicked off, which would make it impossible for the conference to have a winning record.
The SEC teams have only played themselves over the past month, meaning when one SEC team wins another loses - hence the .500 mark.
