Legendary Blackhawks Broadcaster Pat Foley Will Call Cubs Game at Wrigley Field

According to Jeff Agrest of the Chicago Sun-Times, former Chicago Blackhawks broadcaster Pat Foley will fulfill a lifelong dream by calling a Chicago Cubs game at Wrigley Field on August 23. The Cubs are set to face the St. Louis Cardinals that day for a doubleheader. Foley will call the night game, which starts at 7:05 p.m. CDT.

The game of broadcaster musical chairs continues. Lately, the Cubs have been switching broadcasters between the radio and television side of things. Pat Hughes, usually the radio play-by-play announcer, has been calling some TV games. Zach Zaidman joined the Cubs radio team in 2018 and has been filling in more as the radio play-by-play guy. Rick Sutcliffe, Ryan Dempster, and Ron Coomer, among others, have also worked in different roles. It’s become a nightly guessing game for Cubs fans as they wonder which announcer will call what and on which platform.

Nonetheless, this is an announcement that many fans can get on board with. Foley is one of the most legendary voices in sports broadcasting, especially in Chicago. Foley will call the first three innings on the radio (670 The Score), move to Marquee Sports Network for innings 4-6 on TV, then back to the radio for the final three innings.

Foley’s Blackhawks Career

On October 19, 1980, Foley became the voice of the Blackhawks. After 39 years, he called it quits on April 14, 2022, following a “Hawks win! Hawks win!” Now fans of both the Hawks and Cubs will get a special treat. “The last thing for me to do in my mediocre career is to call a game at Wrigley Field,” Foley said before his last Blackhawks game. His career was anything but mediocre.

Foley has called White Sox games and Cubs road games, filling in for Chip Caray in the 2000s, but never a game at Wrigley Field. He told Blackhawks President of Business Operations Jaime Faulkner, “It’s been a dream of mine.”

Unfortunately, if you were looking for a little crossover between Foley and Pat Hughes, that will not happen. Hughes already had an off night scheduled. However, this is the perfect guest replacement. One can only hope we get a 3-3 ballgame in the third inning to hear another one of Foley’s legendary calls. It’s already pretty damn cool how he’s calling three sets of three innings back and forth between the radio and television booths.
