NASCAR meets MLB as drivers visit Chase Field before Championship Weekend

PHOENIX — Chase Field received a few visitors ahead of NASCAR Championship Weekend, as John Hunter Nemechek and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. stopped by the Arizona Diamondbacks’ home before the big event.

It’s not every day that drivers step out of the cockpit and into the batter’s box. Nemechek, representing Legacy Motor Club, and Stenhouse, from HYAK Motorsports, used the stop as a crossover between two very different sports.

Both drivers were able to relax and have some fun with D-backs legend Luis Gonzalez before a pivotal championship weekend, a break from the roaring engines and pit-stop strategy to swing the bat and let loose.

NASCAR has held races in Arizona since 1978, but its first Cup Series event took place in 1988. Phoenix Raceway has long served as a tourist attraction, and many Arizonans have taken advantage of its proximity to catch the action whenever racing returns to the desert.

Linking up with the Diamondbacks was also a way to promote a pivotal weekend for NASCAR, featuring two of its most distinguished drivers.

NASCAR Championship Weekend begins Friday, Oct. 31, and runs through Sunday, Nov. 2. The NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series championship race will be held Friday, followed by the Xfinity Series on Saturday and the Cup Series finale on Sunday.
