Steve Keim: Cardinals Need To 'Be Smart' With Kyler Murray

GM said there was no trade talk around Andy Isabella

Not surprisingly, Steve Keim didn't have any new news on the status of Kyler Murray on Friday.

But, also not surprisingly given his role as Cardinals general manager, Keim also wants the young quarterback to be handled in the right way as he deals with an ankle injury.

"I know Kyler can play, he extremely tough, and I don't think there are any questions in our organization internally about his mental makeup or his willingness to play through anything," Keim said during an appearance on the "Burns and Gambo" show on 98.7, Arizona's Sports Station. "We have to be smart whether he is going to play or not and think about the big picture. We have to make sure we don't re-aggravate something or do something that is going to hurt us later in the season. I know we will do the right thing and go through the checks and balances process and make sure the right decision is made."

As for backup QB Colt McCoy if needed, Keim said there is plenty of confidence in the vetern.

"We really feel like he can sort of function at a high level in this offense," Keim said. "That's why we do what we do in the offseason. You don't just build a team to think about the starters and the Pro Bowlers. You have to think about where your depth is going to be challenged."

-- Keim was asked if he already knew Murray's status, and that the week of will-he-or-won't-he was just gamesmanship for the 49ers' sake.

"I'm sure there is some of that that goes on, but too many times I've seen situations where you truly have to go out on the field and see how a guy is moving around on game day," Keim said. "I respect the question but so many times in this area there is a grey situation."

-- On the subject of J.J. Watt's status, "we should know shortly." Keim said he wants to be hopeful but "in my position, you prepare regardless."

-- Keim said he didn't field any trade inquiries on wide receiver Andy Isabella.

"I'll say this: My mindset has been this, number one, he has something you can't teach, which is speed," Keim said. "Also, we have a very talented and deep group of receivers, so some of Andy's lack of touches and lack of time can be attributed to that. ... We have a number of players of one-year deals as well. Sometimes it takes guys a while for the light to come on. I'm not saying that's solely the case for Andy, but certainly holding out hope that he continues to progress and maybe get an opportunity this weekend."
