As the PGA Tour continues to work with the Public Investment Fund (PIF), the spotlight has been firmly on Commissioner Jay Monahan . Golf Channel analyst Brandel Chamblee recently spoke about him and labeled his leadership as “poor“.
Speaking in an interview with Golfweek, Brandel Chamblee was asked to rate the leadership skills of Monahan and how he felt about his work as PGA Tour Commissioner. He would thus use the term “poor” to describe his (Monahan) stint.
Chamblee though was not against Jay Monahan since the beginning, but his decision on merger deal changed his perspective completely against him. He would inform that he has heard “nothing but great things” regarding the top boss and claimed he (Monahan) would have changed the deal if he had the chance to do it over again.
Poor, unfortunately. I think Jay is a sharp guy and I hear nothing but great things about him... I think if he had the chance to do it over again, he would have done it differently. He would have kept more players in the loop, done the best he could to ameliorate the difficulties of that scenario knowing players were in the loop and it may change the deal. Brandel Chamblee said on Golfweek.
Since the merger was announced in June 2023, Monahan has been under the wrath of the fans. During his appearance at the Tour Championship in August last year, he was heavily booed by the supporters.
Another reason why Monahan has received a lot of criticism is due to the way the messages were communicated. Several PGA Tour players attacked their commissioner for this. This was something that Chamblee thinks Monahan could have done better.
Everybody wants to jump on Jay, criticize Jay, and I admit his communication could have been better, no doubt about that. He would admit that. Again, he’s not without fault. He could have done his job better in my view. Brandel Chamblee said.
Brandel Chamblee rips LIV Golfers for “whining” about OWGR points
The interview of Brandel Chamblee also delved into the OWGR situation of LIV Golf. After the OWGR committee declined the application of LIV Golf to receive this points, several members of the 54-hole circuit took a dig at them.
Chamblee would blast the LIV Golfers for this and pointed out that they (LIV Golfers) knew the consequences of their switch. He questioned, “Why are you whining?” when they should’ve known the weight of their decision.
You all knew the consequences of your actions, all of you. You all knew you were playing a tour with no ranking points for very explicit and defined reasons. Shut up! Take the money.

In the first week of March 2024, LIV Golf took back their application for this points. Greg Norman, the CEO of the breakaway tour would hit out at the committee though and claimed OWGR showed “little willingness” to work with them.
It now remains to be seen whether the merger could bring out a solution that would see LIV Golfers earn these points. At the moment, only three members from LIV Golf are in the top 50 rankings.
